My Beauty My Say… Dove

Somewhere along the way everything got confused. While we want to blame social media, the platform that meant now people you weren’t even on the same continent on could feel they legitimately could have a say on your looks and body realistically society has always felt a need to dictate our beauty standards. And while the standards may change, vary and sway throughout history, the basic premise of ‘you don’t quite fit the mould’ has been an underlying theme.

This is why we love this Dove video campaign #mybeautymysay Featuring a host of different women, spread across age ranges, clothing sizes, styles, hobbies, interests and jobs. Because the truth is people, there is no one right way. There is no correct ‘beauty standard’ because we were all born to be different. There are billions of people on earth, how dull would it be if we all were made identical.

This campaign is about reminding all of us that that thing we do – judging on appearance – is not ok and we need to put a stop to it.

“Somewhere along the way, it has become the norm to judge women based on their appearance,” Jennifer Bremner, director of marketing at Dove.

“Instead, her beauty should be celebrated on her terms. We want women to challenge this behavior that has unfortunately become commonplace in our society. We are giving all women a platform to speak out and join us to change the conversation.”

7/10 women receive compliments on their looks more than their accomplishments. We may be arguing for equal pay but it seems equal respect for achievements need to be added to the list.

The film also features plus size fashion and style blogger Jessica Torres of Tiny Red Shoes (who is just so cute and stylish)

The film walks through each woman’s journey from those who said ‘you can’t do this’ or ‘you should be more…’ to how they have ultimately overcome and achieved. Another truly inspiring campaign from the team at Dove.
