With gloomy May weather you might be surprised to hear that we aren’t desperately booking a pool side vacation, but, ask almost anybody who has been, and they will tell you that their ski vacation was one of their best life experiences. And did you know, because of the way the sun bounces off the pure white snow, you can actually catch a little tan skiing too. And of course, let’s not start on the best part of a ski trip… apres ski partying. If you’re keen to discover what all the fuss is about, then you might be considering booking a ski trip of your own. Choosing the perfect destination, equipment and more can be daunting if it is your first time skiing. We’ve put together some handy tips to help you make the perfect choices.
Tip #1. Choosing a Ski Resort
If you’re not clued up on skiing, choosing a resort can be rather daunting. As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to determine all your practical needs, for example where you’re travelling from and whether you’d like to spend all your time on the slopes or enjoy other activities during your trip. Typically, first-time skiers will need a beginner-friendly resort with easily accessible slopes that you can find your feet and learn on. Ideally, opt for a resort that provides beginner ski instruction and lessons until you feel confident enough to go out on your own. This lodge is a great example!
Tip #2. Ski Kit and Clothing
Whilst certain resorts will be able to rent you ski clothing and equipment, if you plan to take this up as a regular hobby then it’s a good idea to invest in your own. In addition, getting your own gear means that you don’t need to worry when it comes to fit and comfort; you’ll be ready to go straight away. A ski jacket, gloves, goggles and boots are the essentials when it comes to what you wear on the slopes. You may even want to invest in your own pair of skis, although they are usually best hired at the resort since they’re very bulky in luggage.
Tip #3. Ski Trip with Kids
Do you want to take the ski trip of a lifetime with your family? If so, you’ll be glad to hear that there are many family-friendly ski resorts around the world where little skiers are welcomed onto the slopes. However, bear in mind that kids’ ski lessons are very sought-after, especially during the school break. So, make sure that your lessons are booked well in advance, or even consider taking ski lessons with your family elsewhere before your trip.
Tip #4. Learning to Ski
For your first couple of days, it’s a good idea to get professional lessons. Even if you have a friend or family member who’s willing to show you, at least one lesson with a professional will pay off – they have taught new skiers thousands of times and know exactly how to get you skiing with confidence on your own. You can book the services of a professional instructor in advance before you arrive at most good ski resorts.
If you’re looking for an action-packed vacation this year, why not consider a ski trip? A fun, adrenalin-pumping activity that the whole family can enjoy, you’ll want to return over and over again.
