New year – new look: Best beauty buys for 2014

After a festive period of indulgence, we often awaken to the New Year with a ‘clean my act up’ attitude. Late night parties, lots – and I mean lots – of gin and Bucks Fizz coupled with a chocolate overdose and a 4am karaoke session often does terrible things to our complexion.

Improve your skin and scale-back the make-up to reveal a more youthful, fresh-faced you by investing in some quality beauty buys.

Base

A quality foundation makes all the difference when it comes to creating a radiant base. If there is one makeup bag essential you don’t want to scrimp on, it’s your foundation. Keep your skin in top condition by investing in a reputable brand. The Bobbi Brown collection at House of Fraser  features some industry gems including the Moisture Rich Foundation, which also packs a handy SPF 15. Delivering a buildable coverage, Moister Rich hydrates tired skin whilst giving it a soft-to-the-touch appearance. If you want to ensure you remain fresh-faced throughout the day, set the foundation with an oil-free, oil-absorbing powder like the Sheer Finish Loose Powder also from Bobbi Brown.

Colour

A clever use of colour can instantly brighten your face, making you appear more awake and ready to face the day. Illamasque have a huge spectrum of highlighting blush shades in cream, velvet and powder applications to give you that perfect post-party pick me up. A scrumptious warming tone is the neutral based Naked Rose powder blusher. A word to the wise: the blush is highly pigmented so don’t go overboard with colour.

Eyes

To appear more alert, dab a tiny bit of white highlighting eye shadow in the corners of your eyes and then brush a pretty, natural tone across your full lid, adding a contouring darker colour into the crease to make eyes appear bigger.  Next, curl your eyelashes and apply a few coats of mascara for a youthful, flirty length.

Don’t forget to show your brows some love either. Groomed eyebrows instantly define your face and can make you appear years younger. Avoid pencil at all cost though, it can be too harsh and create an obvious, drawn in shape. Instead, opt for a powder kit such as the Chanel Perfect Brow Palette which provides everything for enviable eyes.

Lips

To keep with our fresh-faced look, stick to a sheer, natural colour that will warm your face. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is the perfect handbag essential for on the go beauty. It looks dark but goes on with more of a natural, lip-bitten plum that is complementing on all skin tones.
